Can you tell us a little more about yourself and what you’ve been doing lately?
I am Amélie, 26 years old and live with my boyfriend and our 2 cats in Ghent. I am a language teacher in a secondary school. I am also a freelance copywriter. I mainly write for vtwonen. At the moment I’m also working hard on my thesis for the UGent to obtain my Educational Master’s degree. If all goes well, I will graduate in January. I love taking photos, do aerobics and blog occasionally about lifestyle, interior design and - to a lesser extent - fashion.
How do you relax after a stressful day?
With a cup of tea and a Netflix series on the couch, together with Stella and Leo. I also love spending time in the bathroom.
What do you do in your free time?
I’m a real family person so I spend a lot of time with them. I also enjoy strolling around town and drinking coffee - and in my case chai latte - with friends. My favourite spot in Ghent is Madam Bakster. On Sundays Gilles and I like to have brunch, preferably at L’Oeuf Luv.
How would you describe your own interior style?
Colourful and personal. Everywhere in the house there are photos and second hand or travel finds. I like to have a unique interior. Almost every room has a different colour. The living room is light green, the veranda is ochre yellow, the bedroom is blue and our toilet is candy pink. The mancave was given a dark green colour. That way every room has its own atmosphere, and that’s very important to me.
Do you prefer to stay at home or to party hard? (pre-corona times ;))
Staying at home for sure! I find it much nicer to have a drink at home with friends than to go to a pub together. I like to go on holiday, but I also like to come home again.
Are you a slob or do you prefer everything neat and tidy?
I like to have it neat and tidy. Marie Kondo has been my best friend since the corona period. Everything has its place and that’s how I like it the most.
What is the strangest thing your cats have done?
Do you like to spoil your cats with toys or gadgets?
Yes, but they are very picky! It often happens that I bring home a toy and they just leave uninterested. Just the same with cat treats, by the way. Especially Leo is a rather picky eater. Their favourite toy is a piece of string with feathers on and a big bubbles bladder. They love to ‘catch’ those bubbles.
How do your cats relax?
They really enjoy watching the birds and insects outside. In the evening they like to lie with us in the living room. They also love to get their own attention. Leo often comes to bed with us in the morning and enjoys the attention he gets so much.
What’s the biggest mischievousness your cats has gotten into?
They are not big slobs. They actually do little or no mischief. The only thing that is annoying is that Leo bites our plants. I have had to remove a plant several times already because he had completely destroyed it. I try to solve that as much as possible by providing cat grass, but it’s the nature of the animal, I’m afraid…
What are your tips for new cat owners?
Give your cats time to get used to the new environment. Let them discover room by room so that they don’t immediately receive too many stimuli. It is also important not to place their food and water next to each other and you should provide a 1,5 litter trays per cat (we have 2).
